Summer, summer, summertime is here and guess what? It’s time to switch up our skincare routine. I’ve tag-teamed with Melissa of Ritual Skin to bring you five tips to keep your skin in optimum shape all summer long.
1. Wear Sunscreen
OK. You’re probably like “duh,” but you’d be surprised at how many people skip this step, saying “Oh, I’m not going in the sun for that long.” Well, even on a cloudy day, the sun’s harmful rays can cause damage to your skin so just imagine what it can do on a 90+ degree day! Most facial moisturizers have SPF in them, but sometimes that isn’t enough. SPF 15 is enough for day-to-day activities, but you’ll want at least SPF 30 if you are working outside or swimming. Apply it 30 minutes before heading out and be sure to reapply it every couple of hours.
2. Change your cleanser
The weather is warmer and sweat is inevitable. If you’re wearing makeup, it’s mixing in with it and clogging your pores. I notice that I touch my face more in summer, just to quickly blot or wipe off sweat. There’s more dirt and oil to clog up pores. Something must be done. In comes a new cleanser with properties to pull out oil. We need a deep pore cleanse in our skincare routine in order to get all of the sweat, makeup, dirt and oil off our skin. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend alternating your regular cleanser with a deep cleansing one.
3. Switch up your makeup routine
Now that summer is here, you don’t want to go for the heavy makeup that we tend to steer toward in winter. As I mentioned above, the sweat and oil on your face and makeup don’t like each other and will cause breakouts galore. Wear lighter makeup – even BB tints and creams in place of your foundation. They allow your skin to breathe, plus SPF is included in them too, so it’s a win-win.
4. Keep your lips moisturized
How often we forget about them, yet they are an important part of our skincare routine! Sunlight and warm conditions can dehydrate and burn lips, making them flaky and painful as skin renews underneath. Keep your lips nourished and hydrated with a lip balm with SPF in it. I wear a lot of lipstick (obviously), so I like to apply my lip balm as I’m getting ready and then my lipstick right before I leave the house.
5. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is not only important when the weather is extremely hot, but it is imperative to keep your skin looking good. Without enough water, your skin can become dry and dull. Drinking lots of water decreases the amount of oil on your skin and works well with your external skincare routine. Double duty on hydration is never a bad thing!
I’m still getting my regular facials with at Ritual Skin, and this summer they have a special Mermaid Facial which features a cooling seaweed mud mask to draw out the oil and impurities in your skin. Get one!
